Buying your first boat is an exciting step, but it can also be overwhelming. Whether you’ve spent your life boating or are new to the Knoxville boating community, Travis Marine is here to answer some of the most common questions we get in store.

What Type of Boat is Best for Me?

Your ideal boat depends on how you plan to use it. If you want a family-friendly, comfortable cruising experience, a Premier pontoon offers a combination of luxury, space, and smooth handling. If you’re into watersports, a Cobalt surf boat is engineered for wakesurfing and top-tier performance. For those looking for a great deal, a quality used boat may be the best option.

How Much Does a Boat Cost?

Pricing varies based on size, features, and whether you buy new or used. Premier pontoons range from affordable models to high-end luxury setups. Cobalt surf boats are premium, performance-driven vessels designed for watersports. If you’re budget-conscious, used boats can offer significant savings while still delivering great performance. Take a look at our current used stock here. Other costs to consider include maintenance, repairs, insurance, and gear!

What’s the Difference Between New and Used Boats?

New boats come with warranties, the latest technology, and no previous wear. Used boats offer lower prices and may already include added accessories. Our team carefully inspects and services every used boat to ensure it meets our high standards before we list it for sale.

How Do I Finance a Boat?

Many first-time buyers choose to finance their boat. We can refer you to trusted lenders who offer flexible financing options to fit your budget. Down payments and monthly costs vary, but our team can help you understand what to expect and secure the best rates.

Where Can I Store My Boat?

Knoxville has a variety of storage options, including marina slips, dry storage, and trailer storage at home. If you plan to store your boat on the water, choosing a high-quality cover and maintenance plan is key to keeping it in top shape. Ask us for our recommendations!

What’s Required to Legally Operate a Boat in Tennessee?

In Tennessee, anyone born after January 1, 1989, must have a Tennessee Boating Safety Education Certificate (AKA a boating license) to operate a boat with more than 8.5 horsepower. We’re happy to guide you through the process and provide resources to get certified.

How Much Maintenance Does a Boat Need?

Like any vehicle, boats require regular maintenance. This includes oil changes, winterization, and routine cleaning. Our on-the-water location makes it easy for you to service your boat without the hassle of trailering it back and forth. For most boat engines, a good rule of thumb is to change the oil every 50-100 hours of operation or at least once a year, whichever comes first. Other maintenance includes regular cleaning, winterization at the end of a season, inspections of belts, mechanical parts, and electronics.

Can I Test Drive a Boat Before Buying?

Absolutely! One of the biggest advantages of buying from Knoxville’s only on-the-water dealership is that you can try before you buy. We offer demo rides to ensure you find the right fit before making a decision. Ask about our demo days where you and the whole family can make an experience out of your test drives!

What Accessories Should I Get?

Must-have accessories include life jackets, a safety kit, dock lines, bumpers, and a high-quality boat cover. If you’re into watersports, you’ll also want a wakeboard, tow ropes, and ballast bags for your Cobalt surf boat. Make sure to check out the Travis Marine boat shop while you’re in!
